Inclusion Services

Anyone who has registered for a Community Ed program and has made a request for an accommodation or support to participate.

Community Ed will provide the type of support deemed necessary for successful participation in our programs. Accommodations may include training with program staff, consultation with individual and family, activity modification, behavior management support, sign language interpreters, assistive devices, and/or provision of a support staff. Accommodations are made as needed and can be flexible and creative, so long as not fundamentally altering a program.

1. When registering through the Community Ed online registration system, first log into your existing account or create one, if you haven't already done so.
2. Register for the program of choice.
3. When registering for the program, you will be asked the question, "Does the participant have any social, emotional, cognitive, physical or medical needs that require accommodations during the program? (i.e. allergies, asthma, behavior concerns, physical or intellectual impairment, etc.)". Please select "yes" when prompted. A series of additional questions populate to gather additional information regarding the participant's needs.
4. Upon reviewing new registrations that indicate a need for accommodation(s), the inclusion and recreation supervisor will begin the assessment process, which could include a review of IEP or 504 documentation, contacting parents or guardians for additional information, contacting school personnel, etc.
5. After gathering applicable information and identifying participant needs, an "Inclusion Action Plan" is created to summarize the participant's needs for that specific program on an as-needed basis. NOTE: Inclusion Action Plans are environment-specific, and a plan can be altered for each program environment.
6. Inclusion Action Plans are shared with staff working within the program to review and ultimately implement the strategies, interventions, and/or accommodations necessary when the program takes place.

No. There is not a limit to the number of programs one can register for and receive accommodation or support. Accommodations and support may vary from program to program and as needs change.

Yes. Community Ed program participants and guests are expected to adhere to our behavior management guidelines. In addition, all participants should have the ability to primarily meet their activities of daily living needs (e.g. feeding, toileting, dressing, etc.). Accommodations and modifications may be able to be made to the program to assist participants in adhering to the behavior management guidelines and meeting personal care needs, and will be coordinated on a case-by-case basis. 

Please contact Chloe Burcke, Community Ed Inclusion and Recreation Supervisor, with questions and to determine if accommodations can be made. Options for a personal caregiver to attend with a participant to meet activity of daily living needs may also be an alternative option, but must be approved prior to the start of the program.

If a participant benefits from additional staffing assistance to be successful in a program and this is indicated on their registration, Community Ed may be able to provide up to a 1:1 support staff member to assist them in the program. NOTE: If additional support staff is not able to be secured, the inclusion and recreation supervisor will work with you to identify potential alternate solutions.

Additional support staff are typical staff members hired to work in the select program (i.e., assistant instructor, swim instructor, activity assistant, etc.) and are identified to provide staffing to support the needs of one or more program participants. Support staff members are provided with a participant's Inclusion Action Plan to review, along with any supportive strategies, resources, equipment, etc. to meet a participant's needs within our inclusion services.

Staff members are trained on Parkway-Rockwood Community Ed's inclusion mission, inclusion services, how to support participants of all ability levels in a program setting, and how to modify and adapt program activities to fit participant needs as a whole. Staff may be provided with additional information on participant-specific needs, which may be in collaboration with parents and guardians, school personnel, etc. (example: a specific medical management routine or how to use specific equipment).

Staff members are not expected or required to have a degree, background or specialized training in working with participants of specific populations, but are given the tools and resources to provide support to participants within our inclusion services.

Yes, we currently offer adaptive swimming and other adaptive recreation programming that can be found in our online catalog and registration system. If medication is to be administered during our programs, Community Ed requires a medication administration form to be filled out prior to participation in the program. Forms will require a Health Care Provider/Licensed Prescriber signature for both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Once completed, the Health Care Provider/Licensed Prescriber will need to send a copy either via email at info@prcommunityed.org OR fax at 636-891-8844, attention: Inclusion and Recreations Supervisor. Hard copies may be brought directly to the program site on the first day of the program.
