NEW SPRING BREAK TRIP FOR PARKWAY 8TH GRADERS

For spring break, Parkway 8th graders can travel to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park for an adventure-packed week of hands-on, real world STEM experiences. The week will be filled with exploring the wilderness, searching for wildlife, learning about the environment and developing leadership skills while applying Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Join Parkway teachers and administrators as we stay at the Great Smoky Mountain Institute at Tremont, an environmental education center inside the National Park.

Experience STEM!

Science: Utilize the scientific method during every outing and hone your observation skills.

Technology: Explore the tools used by the area’s first settlers and compare the artifacts to what is used today.

Engineering: Go white water rafting! Become a hydrologist as you determine the effect dams have on the region’s recreation industry and energy creation.

Math: Hike! Collect data to analyze the air quality and concentration of species at different altitudes.

White Water Rafting

Prepare to get wet whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River! Spend a day at the world renowned Nantahala Outdoor Center learning how to raft safely as you navigate the river. Investigate watershed and the engineering of the dam systems used to make rafting possible.
