Parkway-Rockwood Area Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) is funded by federal and state grants and serves students 17 years of age and older who are no longer enrolled in high school. We have more than 50 classes at 25 sites located within the school districts of Parkway, Rockwood, Pattonville, Hazelwood, Clayton, Maplewood-Richmond Heights, Brentwood, and Ladue. The program specializes in the areas of English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Education and Literacy.
Prospective teachers must have a four year college degree with original transcripts supplied in a timely manner. They must also pass a thorough fingerprint and background check process as mandated by Parkway School District and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. All positions are part-time.
Once hired, teachers must obtain state certification in adult education. In order to accomplish this, all new hires will need to:
- Successfully complete a pre-certification workshop in Columbia, MO. This is required under state guidelines.
- Complete state certified professional development yearly.
English as a Second Language Teacher
An English as a second language (ESL) teacher is responsible for providing lessons and support to students who are learning English as a second language. ESL teachers must be adaptable, creative, and sensitive to the cultural differences expected when working with students from foreign countries. You do not need to speak a foreign language in order to teach ESL.

Adult Basic Education and Literacy/High School Equivalency Teachers
An Adult Basic Education and Literacy/High School Equivalency (HSE) teacher is responsible for providing lessons and support to students who are lacking basic education skills in reading, language, and/or math. Students may or may not have a high school diploma. For those students without a diploma, the Adult Basic Education and Literacy teacher will help those students prepare to take and pass the high school equivalency (formally GED) examination.

Teach an adult to read, write, and improve math skills. Help a foreign student converse and understand American customs. Work one-on-one or with a small group. You do not need to be a certified teacher. Training provided.
